Our Mission.
The idea was fostered by a tragedy: After a long struggle with combat related Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), my former fiancée and best friend Sgt. Jeffrey M. Lehner, USMC, shot and killed his ailing father before turning the gun on himself. The wounds of war he suffered from within were more than he could handle. His untimely death and violent behavior represents the potential outcome of psychological trauma that plagues over 500,000 veterans to date who suffer from PTSD.
The Dept. of Veterans Affairs (V.A.) provides help, but cutbacks, lack of funding, and red tape make it nearly impossible for counsellors to handle the enormous number of PTSD claims being filed. According to VA data, the nationwide average patient to doctor ratio has now grown to a shocking average of 531 to 1. Independent programs are few and far between, and rarely as comprehensive as what these men and women need in order to make a successful recovery from the scarring of PTSD.
It is through the pain of loss and depth of understanding that The Lehner Foundation and "Jeff‘s House" were born. Our mission is to help veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan heal the wounds within by providing the most up to date psychiatric help combined with a holistic approach in a controlled, loving, civilian environment. Following in the footsteps of Heath House, Sarah House, Serenity House, Hospice, and others, we hope to make a change in the lives and families of those who have sacrificed so much for our homeland safety and freedom around the globe.
